EUGEN MAERSK

Eugen MaerskThe Eugen Maersk (IMO: 9321550, Port of Registry: Randers, Denmark) is, together with her sisters (amongst others) 'Emma Maersk', 'Estelle Maersk', 'Evelyn Maersk' and 'Ebba Maersk', the largest containership ever with a total teu capacity 11,000 teu (of which 1,000 forty foot reefer containers) according to the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. A total capacity of 13,500 teu is also possible when containers are not fully loaded. This capacity is possible by stacking the containers in 22 rows wide. Maersk calculates the teu capacity with loaded containers. The vessel is 397 meters long, 56 meters wide, has a depth of 30 meters and a deadweigth of 156,907 tons. Amazingly, all this size and capacity requires a crew of only 13. The specially designed Wärtsilä diesel engine delivers 80,000 kW. A waste heat recovery system is installed to optimize the use of the energy produced, so that the engine can deliver up to 90,000 kW. The vessels in this series will also establish new standards for safety and environmental responsibility. Environmentally-safe silicone paint, for example, is used on the hull, below the water line, reducing water resistance, and thereby fuel consumption, by 1,200 tons per year. The ship was delivered by Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd in 2008 as the seventh and last ship in Maersk's PS-class. The new MSC vessels, amongst which is the MSC Danit are smaller in dimensions, but can transport more TEU than the PS-class vessels of Maersk, due to her smart design (which doesn't give her the best looks).

The Eugen Maersk will arrive later tonight at the APM terminal, Rotterdam from Tanger Med, terminal. Tomorrow, the vessel will set sail for Felixstowe. She will return within two months to Rotterdam.

CMA CGM MAGELLAN

Today's Ship of the Day is the CMA CGM Magellan (IMO: 9454424, Port of Registry: London). The Magellan is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum teu capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. She was built in 2009 by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. The vessel's design is comparable to the recently built MSC vessels (such as: MSC Beatrice) with the superstructure located midships. One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. The Magellan will have seven sisterships, amongst which are the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real which have also been recently delivered. She is deployed in CMA CGM's FAL1 loop connecting China and North-Western Europe.

The CMA CGM Magellan arrived this morning at the APM Terminal, Rotterdam with the last port of call at Le Havre. She will visit Rotterdam next week once more on her second call in the loop.

Due to her design with the superstructure midships, she is capable of transporting about 14,000 TEU, more than Maersk PS-class (amongst which is the Emma Maersk). One can argue about the looks of this vessel, however the design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded. HR.MS. SCHIEDAM (M860)

The Hr.Ms. Schiedam (M860) is a Dutch minehunter built by Van der Giessen-de Noord. She started her service in 1986. The vessel is 51 metres long and 9 metres wide, has a maximum speed of 15 kts and a maximum range of 3,500 miles at 10 kts. The M860 is armed by one GIAT 20F-2 20mm gun, has a Thales DUBM 21B, hull mounted sonar. The most remarkable feature of the minehunters of the Alkmaar-class, to which the Schiedam belongs, is the lack of steel. The hull is made of polyester and the further contruction of the ship is made of aluminium. This because many seamines react to disturbances in the magnetic field. Due to cost saving at the ministry of defense, four of the original fifteen vessels of the Alkmaar-class have been sold to the Latvian government.

The Hr.Ms. Schiedam has entered the Port of Rotterdam this morning. She will take berth at the navy berth in the Haringvliet.
